These Two Guys Got Tired of Slow Internet … So They Built Their Own
The Genius Impact runs throughout Michigan with PrimeOne

When the internet sucks, build a better one

In Saline, Michigan, two regular guys were dealing with the same internet headaches a lot of us know too well. Slow upload speeds, constant buffering, and customer service that didn’t seem to care. Samuel Herman had grown up in a household where good internet was a must, but it felt like no matter how much they paid, the service just couldn’t keep up. When he moved into a new place in 2021, it became clear the big-name providers weren’t going to do anything about it.

So instead of waiting around, he teamed up with his brother-in-law, Alexander Baciu, and decided to build something better. Baciu already had experience in the world of fiber construction, so the idea made sense. They didn’t just want to fix it for themselves. They wanted to bring real internet to their whole neighborhood.

What they built

They launched their own internet service called Prime-One. Everything they built is underground fiber, which helps avoid outages from storms, tree branches, and all the usual stuff that messes with overhead wires. The speeds they offer are symmetrical, which means your uploads are just as fast as your downloads. That’s huge for anyone working remotely, gaming, or uploading big files.

Their pricing is pretty simple:

  • 500 Mbps for $75
  • 1 Gbps for $80
  • 2 Gbps for $95
  • 5 Gbps for $110

No contracts. No weird surprise fees. Equipment is included. And you even get a 30-day free trial to try it out first.

The impact

Since launching in early 2025, they’ve already connected about 1,500 homes and laid down 75 miles of fiber. Their next goal is to reach 4,000 homes. Not bad for a couple of people who were just tired of buffering.

It’s cool to see something like this come together. Not just because the internet speeds are great, but because it shows what’s possible when you stop waiting around for big companies to fix things. Prime-One is a reminder that sometimes the best solution is to build it yourself.

Why it matters

This whole story hits close to home for us because RackGenius is also a Michigan-based company. We know what it’s like to build something from the ground up when the big guys aren’t cutting it. Supporting businesses like Prime-One means backing real people who are out there making the internet better for their communities, not just chasing profits. It’s local companies like these that keep things moving forward, and we’re all about it.
